Who we are

Steps & Sips is a small, invite-only step-counting game run by a group of friends in Vancouver. It is not a commercial service and there is no advertising on it.

What we collect

  • Your mobile phone number, used to sign you in and to send the texts described below.
  • The display name and sneaker profile picture you choose.
  • Your daily step counts, the dates they belong to, captions, and the photos you upload.
  • Likes and comments you leave on other members' posts.

We do not collect location data, health-app data, contacts, or payment information.

How we use your phone number

Your number is used for three things only:

  • A 6-digit sign-in code when you sign in.
  • An optional daily reminder to log your steps, at an hour you choose.
  • An optional Wednesday text announcing who won the week.

Message frequency varies: expect roughly 8 messages per month, and up to one reminder per day if you turn reminders on. Msg & data rates may apply.

We never sell, rent, or share your mobile number or your consent to receive texts with anyone else for their own marketing or promotional purposes.

How to stop the texts

Reply STOP to any message to stop all non-essential texts, or reply HELP for help. Reply START to begin receiving them again. You can also turn the daily reminder and the Wednesday result off individually on the Settings page at any time.

Who can see your posts

Only signed-in members of this private group can see the feed, the standings, and the photos. Photos are stored privately and are shown through short-lived links. Photos attached to walks older than 30 days are deleted automatically; the step count and date are kept so the history stays intact.

Service providers

Text messages are delivered by Twilio, and accounts, step data and photos are stored with our hosting and database provider. They process this data on our behalf only.

Deleting your data

Ask the group's organiser to remove your account and everything tied to it — your posts, photos, likes and comments — is deleted permanently.
